Motherhood Doubts

How Can We Know If We're Doing Motherhood Right?

How Can We Know If We're Doing Motherhood Right?

These are the moments that mothers never forget: during a car ride, the quietest child suddenly asks a big question. Such surprising moments hit right in the heart – and leave many moms wondering: Am I doing enough? Am I good enough? The answer often begins right where children make us marvel.

An Unexpected Dialogue

Child: "Mom, what is God's favorite insect?"

Me: "Well..." (I started a monologue about how God loves all His creation, but loves humans the most. With insects, I imagined He loves them all equally. Does that make sense?) This question made me reflect on the simplicity and depth of a child's curiosity. Such questions remind us how important it is to appreciate the little things in life.

The Desire to Get It Right

As a mother, you want to do everything right, especially when it comes to imparting faith. I read the Bible, joined a mothers' group at church, and wanted to lead my children to Jesus. They should know they are loved and that because God loves us, we should love others too. This task of raising little people who will hopefully become followers of Christ is no small feat. It requires patience, wisdom, and love. Every day brings new challenges, but also new opportunities to live and share faith.

Encouragement from a Friend

One day, a wise friend encouraged me by saying that I was already doing motherhood right. I was surprised because I remembered all the mistakes I had made. She said, "You are already living for Jesus. Just tell your children about it." These words were a ray of hope on a day filled with doubt. They helped me realize that it’s not about perfection, but about being authentic and living faith in everyday life.

Sharing Faith in Daily Life

So I began to share with my children about my actions. When I visited sick friends, I explained to them why we did that. When our pastor fell ill, I talked to my children about it, and we prayed for him. My three-year-old painted so many pictures for him that his wife considered buying a second refrigerator to hang them all up. These little gestures of love and care are what keep faith alive. They show that our faith doesn’t just happen in church, but in every aspect of our lives.

Living God's Words Daily

The Bible says: "Take to heart these words. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." (Deuteronomy 11:18-19) These words remind us that faith is not an isolated part of our lives, but our daily companion. They encourage us to talk about God’s love and wisdom in every moment of the day.

Making the Most of Little Moments

I began to intentionally explain to my children what God is doing in our lives. Whether in the minivan, at the playground, or in the bathtub – I shared with them about God’s goodness, mercy, and presence. In the chaotic and in the beautiful moments. These everyday conversations help lay a strong foundation of faith. They show the children that God is present in every part of our lives and that we can talk to Him at any time.

A Collective Breath

Every mother knows the feeling of never doing enough. But maybe we are doing it right. Perhaps we can collectively take a deep breath, pray, and tell our children about this wonderful world. His creation and His love are worth talking about. Especially when it comes to God’s favorite insects. These conversations are what integrate faith into our children's daily lives and show them how alive and relevant it is.
