God, the author of hospitality, created a world and invited us in by providing us with all kinds of food and drink. How can we imitate Him in this? The world is full of people who are hurt, busy, or searching for meaning. Opening our home to them can be a powerful way to show the love of Jesus. Every visit can be an opportunity to reflect God's generosity.

Perhaps you have a neighbor who longs for community. A simple dinner can be the beginning of a deep friendship. Or a single mother who is craving a break – an afternoon in your living room can be a valuable respite for her.

Creating Inviting Encounters

When a non-believing neighbor enters your space and sees a different way of life, they can recognize the goodness of God. Your openness and warmth can accomplish more than a thousand words. When a weary mother stops by and you entertain her children while pouring her a cup of coffee, she sees the peace of Jesus. Such moments of hospitality are opportunities to make Christ's love visible.

For young couples or students standing at a crossroads in their lives, an invitation to a shared meal can be a valuable support. They experience the invitation and care of Jesus and may feel inspired to become more hospitable themselves.

Hospitality as an Expression of Love

We have been encouraged that everything we do "for one of the least of these brothers and sisters" (Matthew 25:40), we ultimately do for Him. I remember when an old school friend was in town and reached out. Although our lives with five little daughters were very different from his life as a single man, we invited him over. We hosted him, and he participated in our family worship service, even singing a hymn. This encounter led to deep conversations about faith and life.

We have invited families to casual dinners, themed homeschool celebrations, and even family worship services focused on food, hymns, and Bible study. These shared experiences not only strengthen community but also the faith of those involved.

Community Through Shared Meals

God's people often gathered in homes, and through the "breaking of bread in their homes, they ate together with glad and sincere hearts" (Acts 2:46). We can continue this tradition today by regularly inviting people over. A simple meal can be the beginning of a deep friendship and a stronger faith.

We recently moved twenty minutes away from our old town and remember to "make new friends, but keep the old." The arrival of baby goats on our property has helped with this, and many families have visited us to see them. Some stay for dinner or even a holiday celebration. Others just need a glass of water. Welcoming others requires preparation or sacrifice. We clean, cook, decorate, set aside our preferences, and do extra dishes. While we could focus on the burden, it is an opportunity to connect with Jesus. We can offer our homes and recipes to Him, pray for the people who will enter, and strive to maintain a spiritually fulfilling home that builds others up.

There are subtle and obvious ways to connect with Jesus while people are in our homes. Are we inviting? Is the home a place of peace and order? Are there scriptures on the wall? Is uplifting music playing in the background? Such small details can make a big difference.

In its simplest form, hospitality is the willingness to share your life, your space, and your resources. When this is done with a heart for Jesus, the ultimate host who prepares a place and a feast for us, hospitality becomes a powerful way to share Christ, connect with others, and experience joy. The joy that arises from genuine encounters can have a profound impact on both the host and the guest.
